Inside Fantasy Life: Begonia’s Raw, Radiant New Album About Hope and Chaos
Begonia Drops Fantasy Life: A Deep Dive Into Her Most Vulnerable Work Yet
Begonia has always lived in the in-between — that shimmering space where heartbreak meets humor, and fantasy leans just close enough to reality to sting. Today, the Canadian singer-songwriter (born Alexa Dirks) unveils Fantasy Life, a kaleidoscopic new album that marries the mundane with the magical across thirteen songs. Written under the blazing Los Angeles sun and recorded amid Winnipeg’s frozen stillness with longtime collaborators deadmen (Matt Peters and Matt Schellenberg), the project captures the dualities of being human — the delusional hope, the quiet ache, and the unexpected beauty in the mess.
“It’s the promise of spring and then all the snow melts to reveal piles of glittering garbage,” Begonia says of the record’s emotional landscape. That same contrast pulses through Fantasy Life, where glossy synths crash against vulnerable lyrics and hope hides under layers of realism.
The album arrives with a video for “My Fantasy Life,” a whimsical reflection of Begonia’s playful mind. “I’d been having a lot of daydreams about being a worm,” she laughs. “Sometimes the slimiest entity can help the flowers grow — that’s my fantasy.” It’s that kind of self-aware magic — raw, weird, and warm — that makes Fantasy Life one of her most captivating chapters yet.
